Netflix: Is it Over-Hyped or Just Right?
The idea to do survey research on the usability of the Netflix website and app is based on the large number of individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and career fields who subscribe to Netflix. Netflix has become one of the most popular streaming and rental sites to date. With over 75 million subscribers nationwide and 25 million world-wide, the service which began in 1997 must be doing something right. Two questions that must be answered are: “How did Netflix become a rental and streaming giant?” and “Is the Netflix phenomenon a fluke or does it provide a valuable service to a population that wants instant access to news, music and now movies and television?” This research ultimately aims to answer the question: Is Netflix (with specific emphasis on website and app usage) over-hyped or just right?

The purpose of this project is to determine the usability of the Netflix website and app. The following three tasks were completed to formulate these results:
• Determine how effective the website and app is to browse for titles of
• Determine how effective the website and app is for selecting DVDs
• Determine if participants can easily add, delete and rearrange DVDs in the
After completion of each task, participants completed surveys via the online site, Survey Monkey. The results were analyzed to determine the user friendliness of the Netflix website and app. The users for this research are Netflix subscribers between the ages of 20-50. These participants are working professionals in a variety of industries ranging from production to secondary education. These individuals were selected due to their ability to pay the monthly fees associated with Netflix.

Results were highly favorable. Based on the responses to questions like: How would you rate the ease of navigating through the Netflix queue? and How would you rate the ease of selecting movies and television shows using the app? Netflix lives up to the hype. All participants stated that they were either extremely satisfied, very satisfied or moderately satisfied with their Netflix subscriptions.
One respondent stated, “I like being able to access Netflix on any device. The app is relatively easy to use. The website is straightforward and user friendly.” This is great news for the company, subscribers and non-subscribers who are hoping to join the thousands worldwide who have embraced the new way of watching movies and television shows.
